About the Project

As of 2013, Woody Allen has written and directed 48 feature-length films. From his early days of slapstick shenanigans in movies like Bananas and Sleeper through his Bergman-esque heady days of Alice and Another Woman, up to his stylistic curveball with Match Point, Woody has devoted his life to creating characters and stories that look inward, examine the unexamined, and make us laugh. One of the most prolific voices in American cinema, Woody began his career in the ’60s with his trademark brand of comedy but his filmography spans multiple genres. It’s worth noting that, since 1982, he’s made a film every year without fail.

I’ve loved movies for as long as I can remember. In particular, Woody Allen movies. This summer, as I sat through his latest film, Blue Jasmine, I realized if I watched one of his movies, once a week, it would take nearly a year to see them all. A collection that vast is an impressive feat for any filmmaker. I’ve seen my fair share of his movies but there are likely just as many I’ve missed. This year I aim to fix that. It’s nowhere near the challenge of creating such a massive body of work as Woody’s, but this blog is dedicated to celebrating the hits and occasional misses of his career. In addition to watching every Woody Allen movie in a year, I’ll be writing up my thoughts on each one as I go, looking back at the history of each film, criticisms of the time, and jotting down a few of my own thoughts along the way. Not just a man of movies, Woody is also an accomplished musician, short story author, and playwright. Look for posts about his work outside of films as well.
